Teaming Options

The four team options are broad categories of the permanence and permeability of team boundaries.

Purpose

We recognize four teaming options: broad categories of the permanence and permeability of team boundaries. You might say they are four "ideal" (or extreme) cases, and there is actually more variety in the world around us. But as basic patterns, these four serve us well in understanding the options we have when forming teams.

Notes

In terms of the permanence of team boundaries, we can say that some teams are long-lived while others are short-lived. In terms of the permeability of team boundaries, we find that membership in some teams doesn't change, while in others, it changes quite often. This gives us four different teaming options.

The best teaming option depends on how the benefits and drawbacks of each pattern play out for your organization. That is for you to figure out. We give you the options to consider and hope you don't assume that steady teams are always the best option. Sometimes, they're not.

Rules / Constraints

  • We have not yet defined rules or constraints.
